I received a strange email from the UK Design Board pointing out something I wasn’t expecting. I wanted your thoughts on this. Quoting from the email:

Mr Faulkner,

It has come to our attention that your site is using a potentially offensive colour value in the CSS. The following has been found in the file site.css:

.simplepie .date {
font-size: 0.8em;
float: left;
color: #696969;
margin-bottom: 0.5em;
}

A color value of #696969 could be regarded as sexually offensive. We would like you to consider changing this colour value.

What??? Surely not. There cannot be ‘design police’ out there that can actually think these stupid thoughts, can there?

Anyway, I’d love to gather a few of your opinions on this as it has really irked me. Would it offend you? Are they right to intrude like this?

April Fools’ Day or not, I actually think about this sort of thing whenever I’m selected colors. #696969 and #666 are two that continually make me question whether I should be a little more serious ;)

Have you ever avoided using them though, Derek?

Ha. I don’t really make an effort to avoid using them. I can only name one individual who pointed out that they preferred that I used a different color code rather than #666. No one else has every looked at the css file thoroughly enough to take notice.

Either your playing an April Fool’s joke on us, or someone else is playing it on you. Should we not number houses 69 because it could potentially be offensive? Floor numbers? License plates?

You got me you old swine! Very funny!!! Technically though you should take this down after 12 o’clock - otherwise you’re the fool! Nice post!
