I'm on the fence with widespread usage of transparent .PNGs. I personally plan on making use of IE7's new support [strategically]. The option will open a slew of new options. I believe we'll see a great wave of redesigns making use of IE's new capabilities. But with great power... comes great responsibility. I fear that some casual web designers may go overboard with transparent usage.

Bottom line, transparency will catch on. Design will once again be pushed to new limits.

I know i've been itching to play with transparency for a while now but have held back because of lack of support. Assuming IE7 replaces IE6 with minimum effort for the average user, we'll have a new most-saturated browser.

I think it will be safe to play with transparency - but always check the site doesn't have it's pants down in older browsers. ;)

For those of us in the community heavily aware of the introduction of alpha png support in IE, you can bet you'll see a flood of alpha usage. It'll be the "Age of Alpha" (cue 2001 A Space Odyssey music here). But like the wicked worn, Apple-glassy, drop-shadow, gradient looks before them, you'll see a few who do it exceptionally well and the rest will be mediocre.

new fad, new toys. some internet celebrities will stake their claim to fame on this new gimmick and others will follow and imitate. like css and xhtml and other, now standard, uses of new features will happen along at a more palatable rate which is far beyond those of the early adopters. those designing and developing for the masses would be wise to use the new transparency features in a limited capacity unless you are willing to severely limit other users' experience of your sites.

I do not fear the myspace crowd, but the designers who do not realize that there are older browsers and slower connection speeds. Of course such a technology will catch on, and from there strain on browsers and connections will increase ten-fold. I await the possibilities (as I'm sure I won't be in contention for those who do it exceptionally well), but fear the concequences.

http://test.designalized.com/png-in-ie/
Try this in your IE, 5.5 and 6.0 - maybe 5.0
Transparancy is easy to create, with a little vitamin JS.

Just with any website, their are winners and losers. It all depends on the make up of it. Transperancy will now just be a huge industry trend in web design, and with that come the cheesy websites. With web design now, you can fill your page with animated gif's. You shouldn't but look how many do it. Since Geocities and other authoring web applications, anyone can make a website, whether it's good or bad, it will be there.
