And we’re here. Welcome. Set your bookmarks to http://fadtastic.net/.

The new-look fadtastic offers you, the reader, a larger content area not swamped by comment boxes or restricted by screen size. Speaking of comment boxes, if you have a modern browser you should enjoy a larger comment box which looks darn swish. We’re also (hopefully) valid in terms of XHTML and CSS.
Still to come:

  • Make the old theme available for those who can’t see it go.
  • Introduce a new exciting footer with feeds, recommendations of external sites etc. We’re now playing nice with others.
  • Top Secret new sections. ;)
  • Attaining AA (Priority 2) accessibility.

Feedback is appreciated. Let us know what you think by either posting a comment or if you prefer email contact@fadtastic.net.

Oh, and if you want to come aboard, then simply say so. We’re not elitist.

Many thanks for coming.

Good call on the domain change - I kept trying to go to the fadtastic domain to no avail. ;)

I’m looking forward to seeing how all the changes play out.

Honestyl, it looks great. The redesign was subtle — it stays on brand with the use of color, but just updates the look a little bit. Kudos on your typography, too. Good job. I have one complaint, though: I can’t find your RSS feed. And it seems that your 404 page isn’t rendering properly in Safari. But keep up the good work.

I’ve got a couple things I’ve noticed. All your titles seem really squished. Looking at it makes my head hurt. Looks like your tracking is too tight on your type. Also, this comment window cuts off the bottom bit of the submit button in Camino for OSX. Aside from that it looks pretty cool.

James,

Any chance of a screenshot from Camino? I don’t have that browser. I’d greatly appreciate it if you sent one to contact (at) fadtastic (dot) net.

Thanks for the tips.

Wow, this new design looks nice! I like how it’s more spaced out and clean looking. I’m not sure I like the comment thing though. I mean, it’s pretty cool, but I couldn’t find it at all at first, maybe because I’m used to looking down for the comment form. I also think it feels just a little bit intrusive because I have to close it to go back and reference the article or look at other comments. Anyway, great job!

Not sure if this is the right place to mention, but in Firefox the “make a comment” box doesn’t appear!! Check it out, there’s no way to comment that I can see. I had to go to the site in IE. (Win XP Pro, current v. of browsers).

Woooooooow - Very slick, functionality meets design - I love the “Make a comment” bar - Keep up the good work. I’ll give you a A* for this!

Erica,

Can you please double check to see if the comment ‘bar’ is at the top of your browser. Does it work?

In all browsers (bar IE) the comment bar is stuck to the top of your window pane freeing the page of clutter and allowing easy copying and pasting from the article/comments.

Unfortunately your comment bar doesn’t seem accessible in non Javascript browsers. You could fix this by moving the “display:none” decleration to a “hide comment bar” CSS class and apply this to the bar with a javascript load event - that way the bar would be visible to those browsers without Javascript and would work the way it does now for those with Javascript.

Keith,

Many thanks for the heads up. Obviously the comment bar is causing a few problems so I’ll look into the usability and accessibility of it.

Andrew - yessir, it’s at the top & it works. Thanks for pointing it out ;) For usability it might be good to also have it @ the btm, since I 100% missed it even when checking back just now (I was even heading over to IE to reply), & I’d expect to be able to comment @ the btm after reading all the posts.

The comments box looks cool in Firefox btw, very nice.

Cheers for rechecking, Erica.

Obviously the comment box needs some thought.
