So "spec" means "speculation"? For me it's always meant "specification", as in W3C specs.

That aside, I do agree with the idea they're promoting. I know I've been burned more than once on speculative work.

My magazine design prof in graduate school opened her first lecture with "Never ever ever EVER work on spec."

In print design at least, it's considered hacky to work on spec.

Working on spec has always been the way.
I worked in Civil Engineering for many years and we were always doing tender work. Sometimes these tender projects would take months to complete with a team of engineers and technicians working flat out.
In the end, if you are any good and your price is right - you will get the work.
If your not, then you should fail and learn from the experience.

Opel, I assume you are speaking about another industry and that your comment is not entierly design related. However the point is still the same I guess. Yes these things do occur - but why? and how can a company justify asking people to work for them for free? Why is it allowed? Is it moraly right? - these are the arguments from the No!Spec side. The only way to change the mindset is to refuse to participate. If enough of us do it then one day companies will simply select on the quality of portfolios rather then how much a company will do for free because they won't get the backing they expect and can get away with...
