As we have pointed out before our design and fashion sense is heavily inspired from the past. Arguably from the early nineties we have been going back in time, style wise. How long will this continue for. Will we be soon all dressed as cave men, with accessorised clubs, dinosaur tooth necklaces. and snakes wrapped around our feet for shoes? How far will you go dear reader? The reason for this post is that I came across this web page:

latest fashion design

This is a collection from the latest leading fashion designers. We can see the journey through time continuing with alot of inspiration from the Victorian era creeping in (its happening!!!!). So how far will we go and more appropriately, why do we have to go back through time???

I personally love design like this. I think the old victorian styles show class, and a respect for history, in some sense. I myself have used this style in my websites many times.

As far as our journey into the past, I don’t necessarily think it will go back any further. It’s more of a style than a history lesson.

Maybe it’s nostalgia? Whenever I delve into any form of artwork, or more so when I was still at school my teachers would always tell me to look at how others did the same thing. Researching the past, show’s effort because your comparing the contrast. Some people really get attached to the good old times, and seeing it again amongst all the modern dress in the world makes you feel happy again. (some would almost call it a change, and original even as ironic as it sounds.)

Maybe its time to forget the past, think outside the hourglass of time and do something new! There must be other styles that can be invented. As a designer I am always looking at what others have done and I am guilty too of using the past to depict modernism, character and creativity (see my website!).

I suppose the issue is that term “post modernism” which is a contradiction in itself I suppose! The issue with the modern era is the function over form attitude. Why can we not design “fresh” styles, which hold character, and are yet modern?

Just out of interest, could you maybe give an example?

I’d immediately thought of Mozilla, Digg or Copius when I read your comment. Is this what you’re getting at, Matt?

Andrew,

To be honest there are not very many. One I think does pull it off in terms of style is

2 advanced

This is flash though but the design elements are all modern and speak “character” to me.

The illustrator Gavin Reece

has a great style which is not like any illustrative style that has gone before.

I think some of the architecture in the Halo games also holds character and does not have much reference to the past.

Does any body have any other examples of modern design that does not hark back to the past?

I think a combination of looking sidewise (current trends) and backwards really helps us move forward.

and i agree with the nostalgic aspect as well. good point.
