A fairly new trend making it’s way around town is the Busting Out! design. This trend consists of a design that is breaking out of the borders of the website. The header banner is usually the culprit, and contains an element of it that goes beyond the borders of the website. The result is a website that sticks out and overcomes the 2D medium.

Ever since CSS this trend is much easier to implement.
And I predict much more cases of it to come.

I think this shows that the designer has put a little more thought into the website. Instead of designing the content container and then filling it, (s)he has really thought about the look of the design. Literally thinking outside the box.

I like these:

and of course the new comment box for fadtastic.

Yes I’ve noticed that too. I followed the trend with my www.salted.com site too.

Good example Paul. I see you’ve also used it a tad on www.acleareye.com.

I think it works very well to make an area, or picture become more distinguishable and less “boxy”. It shows a developers CSS skills to. A trend that has huge benefits when produced with style.
