Stickers. Aren’t they great? So many uses.

Well it appears stickers are swarming all over the Internet, mainly in the design field. Think back 5 years and you’ll remember fuzzy stickers with a harsh black drop shadow all over the place. You know the ones - they were circular or star shaped and had ‘click me’ or ‘email me’ plastered over them. They got bigger over time, probably due to increases in Internet connection speeds allowing more imagery on a site. Then they started getting animated and soon went out of fashion. This was the Great Sticker War.

Well now they’re back. But in a modern format. They’ve grown up changed from annoying kids to sensible adults. They’re glossy, have nicely styled text and stand out in a ‘designed’ way.

Want an example? Just see the fadtastic logo. Or visit the following for a good example:

Circles and stars are still the main shape with high saturation colours (mainly pink and green) being used to get attention. However, the subtleties of the sticker keep it from being annoying. For now anyway…

I think they work well, perhaps not the overly glossy ones, but the ones that seem to have a little depth to them.

Personally, I have to say I like the ones that are shaped like spikey suns.

Here’s one example where they’re used to number steps/bullets-points at pen and think

[…] I’ve got no complaints about this, it’s merely an observation of the popularization of a trend. They certainly make for a possible alternative to the sticker in terms of eye-catching attention grabbers. Their staying power is even relatively high, as they are generally unobtrusive, and for example in the Cuban Council link provided above, work in with the layout and colour scheme very nicely. Without said stripe, on many occasions, you might even say that something is missing, just that little detail that brings everything together in a concise way. I’m a fan, they are quite fadtastic. […]

Well, I suppose I should own up to having one of these “stickers” on my own site, which (re)launched back in May. I forget where I first saw one, but I like it so much that I gave it a try.
